Family and Education

Many of Ted's priorities in Congress reflect the values instilled in him by his parents, the late Jean and Bernard Deutch. Ted's father earned a Purple Heart in World War II while fighting at the Battle of the Bulge, and after the war started his own family painting business. Growing up the youngest of five children in working class Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Ted saw many of his neighbors struggle after Bethlehem Steel shut down factories and moved offshore. "Growing up, I saw my community struggle after Bethlehem Steel shut down. Learning firsthand how good-paying jobs are vital for a strong middle class is a lesson I'll never forget." - Ted Deutch After graduating from Liberty High School in 1984, Ted earned a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Michigan, where he met his wife of 25 years, Jill. While at the University of Michigan, Ted was awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship, our nation's public service tribute to the President Harry Truman.
